Can you figure this one out??

I was out detecting yesterday in a colonial field that has produced civil war relics & Rev war relics, Spanish silver coins, early american silvers and various types of buttons, both flat and two piece. While digging around yesterday I came across this piece of what I assume is brass. It has a very deep concave recess in the ball, and the stem is broken off of whatever it was attached to. I could use your help if you have any ideas. Thanks in advance!

I don't know what it is, but if you had two of them, you could mount a 1" rod between them.

Possibly an old car mirror pivot arm..
The socket is where the ball on the mirror part would pivot:icon_scratch:

My first thought is it looks like some kind of primitive tie rod end.

i thought car when I saw it. Tire rod where it joins.

It looks like an endcap to a wagon/carriage handle. The mounting plate is missing.
