Fisher F75 SE LTD
Garrett AT Pro
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
IMG_7141.JPGI am not a rock hound but find it interesting though. If my metal detector doesn't ping, I more than likely don't pick up things. However, on a recent kayaking day trip, a buddy and myself pulled onto a dirt/sand bar and I looked down to see this glistening in about a foot of very clear cold water. It is about the size of your thumb and has dark red stones (Garnet?) in a softer looking substrate with some mica and other sparkling minerals. It caught my eye because it was different than any other rock around it. I threw it in my cooler pack. Would like to know if it is common to the North Carolina foothills and what it might be. The photo isn't as bright as the real stone. It would probably look neat if tumbled and polished.

Thanks

Schist with Garnet inclusions, nice find

Rock hit the nail on the head. Awesome find. Yes that is common in the western North Carolina region.

I knew that cause I have found it in a area near me where I live. Just the garnets I found were quite tiny.
1 for rock and 10000. for everyone else :laughing7:
