A Purple Heart and Bronze Star with documentation were found in a forclosed house in Georgia. The local VFW is trying to track down the family, and since the members here are so good at that sort of thing I thought I'd re-post the story here to see if we can help out.

VFW should contact the Army to get his home of record.

Chances are he was not from Ga. Get the home of record and you got the next of kin.

Let's me get to searching the web.

Well that took about 2 seconds, his home of record is Orocovis, Puerto Rico

NOLA, you want to contact the VFW about it ?

I would have no idea where to begin trying to track down relatives. I know that people here have had great success before and am hoping that someone will this time. I think whoever can find them would be the one to contact the VFW, since they would have done all the work here.

He was buried at Ft. Benning.

His wife's name was Geraldine and she passed away in 2001 and was buried in Florida National Cemetery in
Bushnell, FL.

They had a Son but I am coming up empty on that one.

Maybe it's on her marker, anyone in Bushnell, FL. ?

Jeep, I'm coming up with the same info you are, just found the wife's name. Not that she's deceased.

Could she had remarried with a different last name now? Also, the pic shows looks to be a "daughter" in the wife's arms.

The VFW has an email address, did you send the info you found to them?

The folks at Find-A-Grave are good with finding info; many belong to ancestry.com and usually find old obits. If you have the wife's name, you can PM me and I get in touch with F-A-G folks.

Jeep, I consulted Find A Grave...this is what one of the members added. Are you sure she's buried in Florida? I found this on ancestry.

Mmmm, I see what you mean:

http://www.locategrave.org/d/n/Saez-.-Ramirez

Maybe that site in FL and then transferred to Ft. Benning to be interred with her husband?

VA could of initially assigned her to the National in FL and then corrected it, I have hit a wall, can't find
any mention of the kid's, the boy or girl's name.

Maybe start searching there

GEORGIA
SSG Angel P. SAEZ-RAMIREZ, hus band o f Mr s. Ge r a l d i n e SAEZ-RAMIREZ, 2708
Broadmoor Dr i v e , Columbus,

The state is listed above the names on that list.

Ah HA!! I knew I was confused. Thanks Jeep :tongue3: I think the best way to find the kids names are to look birth records by the parents names. Some states let you and some don't.

Yep, that's where I hit the wall, trying to find the surviving kids, Probably if someone has an account with one of those people finder things with background and stuff it would be easy. :read2:

I bet if someone local could go to the library they could look up the obit and or birth announcements in the local paper on micro fiche

Those folks @ Find A Grave forum are keeping me busy. I sent the contributor an email asking for help with obits, in the meantime Isabelle posted this from http://thewall-usa.com/guest.asp?recid=45158

Another just posted this...

She did remarry. According to the SSDI her name at death was Geraldine EMMONS.

Here is the data from SSDI:
EMMONS, GERALDINE
Born 21 Sep 1933
Died 08 Feb 2001 (V)
Age 67 yrs
Last Residence: 31907 (Columbus, Muscogee, GA)
Issued: Georgia 256-50-1448

I went back to GenealogyBank and looked for Geraldine Emmons. Still no obit. I even looked at the men named Emmons to see if her husband may have had an obit. No luck.

But at least you know now she did have a different surname. And since her last residence was in GA, I would say her burial at Benning is accurate.

And to answer Threadsewer's question.. yes, she could be buried under her deceased husband's name. Anything can be engraved on a stone, depending on what the family wants.

More from Isabelle... I will send a message to the email address of the nephew and see if I get a response. Hopefully we can get these items back to Angel's family.. Also she just posted this... Message sent. It appears the email is still active. It hasn't been returned undeliverable.. now we just have to wait.

I explained the situation and sent a link to the news article. I also included the VFW Post Commander's contact information, and requested a reply if Mr. Oliver gets my message.

We're making some headway.

I hope not either, but basing on what he put on his uncle's memorial page in 2006...I'm searching all 3 names, the closest I get that may be him would be on FB.

Jeep, can you fire off a message to the VFW, address is on the website. If one would "Google" Angel's name it pops up all over about the medals found. Somebody by now could of read the news & found a relative, friend. :dontknow: The VFW should have some news by now too. :dontknow:
