I read that it used to be owned by the Boy Scouts I don't know if they still do

wait, I thought you said you were told it was off limits. If you don't know who owns it, how can somebody have told you its off limits to detect?

Because I emailed the park office to send me the "rules and regulations" and it was written in there.

If the old trading post is abandoned and is in deep woods and no signs, go for it. Good hunting and good luck.

I hunt 5-6 places that have the plaques installed...old churches, parks, etc. Never had an issue or even anyone blink. I'm going to detect one early tomorrow morning and will film it. It's just a sign and description of WHY it's historic. I don't know what the prerequisites are for BECOMING a "historic site" but I have a feeling it ain't much...
If it's privately held, then you need permission no matter what. But the sign itself is no indication of whether or not it's legal...that's up to the owner. If it's a public property such as a park...I go.
