Found a ring marked "Made of JAD Z. O." From my research I believe the jeweler's note stands for Jade Opal Zoisite??

Sorry about the low resolution photos. Maybe someone can throw in their two cents?

It's obviously hand-carved and seems relatively old. Is there any kind of monetary value to speak of? I suspect it's not worth much but someone did take the time to mark the box it was in so who knows (certainly not me)?

To me it looks like it was made from "mother of pearl" or a shell from some kind of mollusk?.

Yes, it maybe Zoisite. Maybe some ruby crystals. The opaque Zoisite is usually carved and it is found in India. The green color is common. It does look like a gem stone is mounted in the center and that gem stone could be an opal.

A scratch test on the Zoisite should streak white.

Red Flags: The red seems to be on the exact opposite sides of the ring but does not appear to be present on the inside of the ring.

Do you know how to test to make sure it isn’t plastic?

That's exactly what I thought at first, mother of pearl.

I do not, however I was going to take the ring into my local jeweler and have him take a look at it if I have the time. Thanks for the responses.

So I took it to my local jeweler, she hardly gave it a second glance. She was quick to tell me that essentially it was worthless. Said it was made of mother of pearl and that "the gems were not real and painted on." . She confused me with what she said about the gems, so I inquired a bit more but I didn't quite understand what she was getting at. There's a bit of language barrier, she doesn't speak English that well.

She said they were painted on, and that you can see where the paint had smeared a bit. I didnt see what she meant about the paint smearing exactly. I'm not sure if she meant the gems were plastic and then painted over or what exactly.

Thanks for the replies and interest everyone. I'll be using this site/forums again in the future for sure! I'm happy that I stumbled upon these forums, seems to be a pretty active community.

I'm sorry but it is clearly a hideous junk mood ring, the jeweler IMO knows his business.
