I've posted this cuff or shirt button within the last few weeks, but after finally finding this great site I'm sure if it can be positively identified, someone here can do it. The front is plain, so I've only posted the back

I found it a few weeks ago in the same deep layer as a "Monroe" backmarked button. There was nothing at that level except colonial through 1820's period stuff.

"Wellington" does not seem to be listed in any U.S. button reference, or any U.K. button manufacturer reference.

There was action here during the War of 1812, and there is some history of there being Britrish sympathizers.

The presence of the "Monroe" button seems to indicate a political awareness took place here.

Without just guessing, what is it? Is it a backmarked political button to show a British sympathy? Could it be a button to honor Wellington? Is it British or American? Is something else entirely? Thanks for looking

I believe that it is a c. 1815-16 commemorative backmark button produced after Wellington's victory at Waterloo.

Gilt buttons, generally plain faced, with patriotic or political backmarks were quite popular in that era.

PBK and Don, thank you for your replies. Like I said, if anybody had an idea about what it was it would be somebody on this site! It's great to see the other examples also, which pretty much confirm for me that it is a political backmark. Now I've got to figure out if these were manufactured in the U.S. and also figure out what kind of easy goin' folks would invite both a Monroe supporter and a Wellington supporter to the same house, particularly considering all the carnage the British had wreaked on the N.J. salt works down the street... (maybe a boxing match?)
