Can anyone ID this belt plate I found today? **Update 1850 militia panel plate**

***Got this email from 1 expert, two more are still reviewing it. Not nearly as much as we'd all hoped, but can't complain ;D...almost enough to by my new CZ3D for more relic hunting!:
Hi Aaron,
This is an 1850's era Militia style plate known as a Panel Plate,
Very Nice find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Value 300.00 to $500.00,
Here is a Picture of one I have on an original belt.
Thanks Stan Hughes

Got out hunting with Merf at an 1850's house. We asked the owner pretty late in the day after field hunting, so we didn't have much time. Found this belt plate about 6" down right where the front porch would have been. We have found a lot of civil war history in the area (mainly eagle buttons) can any ID this? And yes, I did gouge it >:(

I see no marks or writing on it.
Thanks for your help!

Whether it's CW or just an old 'civilian belt buckle', it's a great-looking item and an outstanding find.

Re: Can anyone ID this belt plate I found today?

It looks civil war period. Could it be a Texas lone star buckle?

Appears to be a c. 1850-65 Miltia panel plate. Listed as such on p. 262 of O'Donnell & Campbell's American Military Belt Plates.

Sometimes attributed as a Texas or Mississippi belt plate and therefore often brings four-figure prices.

Wow!!!! four figure price range??? I'm gonna say that this deserves the banner if that's the case.......and it probably is because I value PBK's opinion greatly on this site.

Looking like you got one sweet looking banner find there my friend.

Should it turn out to be a high dollar find you should do a lot of thinking before selling it. A few grand seldom will match the satisfaction of having such a great item in your detecting collection. Now if you're a poor ole boy like me it may be hard to resist, but even in my case money most certainly is not the deciding factor in whether to sell or keep.

PS.. A marked belt plate is number one on my list. When it comes I'm assuming it will be an early one, but heck Texas wouldn't be too bad either.

Nick if I had known the value of it when I found it there is a good chance that I may have dropped a load in my pants. Thank god merf gave me an extra pair of underwear today ;D

I don't think I want to know why merf issues you gruns, if that's the case.

Other than that, it looks like you've got one hell of a scarce militia plate, and HOO-RAY FOR THAT. I hope you get big bucks / that new detector.
