Both the King's 8th and the 60th Foot were in the Great Lakes. King's 8th buttons are fairly common in Michigan, and even show up in Wisconsin. But both buttons are also reproduced for reenactors. :-\

I think the matching, probably incorrect shanks for pewter buttons is pretty good evidence that's what they are. I used to have a King's 8th button and am pretty sure it had a typical iron shank.

Would it surprise you if I said they were reproductions? Don't see too many Rev buttons looking like that, unfortunately.

But you said they were wrapped in foil? Wouldn't that make you believe they are fairly modern?

I know two solid experts, and many that know much more than I do, so definitely don't take anything I say other than being just my opinion. Everything just adds up to me as being reproductions. (The cimcumstances they were found, the condition, and the backs) Usually when it's that one sided it's easy to guess the answer. And if I'm wrong I know you would forgive me anyway because those would be killer. ;D

no back marks ...little bigger that a nickle found in a cellar behind loose stone wrapped in some type of old foil

could the foil have been tin? if so it would it pre date aluminum foil from 1910 backwards.

Sadly the backs were a giveaway. When I saw the fronts, I nearly fell off my chair, shame they were not the real thing, they would have been some of the best :(

I'll tell you what the front condition looks exactly like.... fresh water lake finds! If these buttons would have been based on brass buttons and not pewter, I think I'd still be scratching my head deciding.
