Can anyone date this bullet? I found it 5 feet down.

Well, after all the hashing it out, I feel pretty sure it's a pistol round. However the 44-40 was used in pistols and rifles to keep from having to carry two different calibers. But then I believe that bullet weight was loaded into the .45 Colt but it should measure .454 in the grooves. On a bullet fired in a rifled barrel there are two measurements, the indentations are the lands diameter while the raised portion is the grooves. The fired bullet is a negative of the actual bore. A bullet is usually just a bit oversized so as to swage itself down to catch the lands and grooves to impart spin and improve accuracy when fired. Oh, and don't forget the .455 Russian the .45 Webley and the .45 Schofield! Determining the origin of a bullet can be very complicated or very easy. You just about have to determine the origin to figure out the approximate date. I quit, it's getting way over my head! M :-[ nty
