Can anbody tell me what this is?__New Information & Solved

It is made of pewter (I think), it tapers .. almost like an old leather punch might have, and it has plaster-like-resinous-gunk that fills about half of the internal cavity.

Any thoughts?

Re: Can anbody tell me what this is?

Hmm.. seems a bit small for that .. almost seems like a handle to a stamp or something, yet I am puzzled by its taper, and the tapered surface seems to be much more "abused" than the actual grip part. After a bit more cleaning, I discovered it has a mark of some sort on it.

Shot in the dark here, but it looks like it could be a stopper to a liqour or wine decanter.

I just received an email suggesting that it is a 1700's horsehair shaving brush handle. That would fit the design of it, and possibly explain the gunk in the center. Now, all I have to do is search the web to see if I can find one similar.

I think it says KENT. http://www.kentbrushes.com/advice.asp

I agree with Kent shaving brush (founded in 1777) :icon_thumright: Not sure how to find the actual model (363), maybe contact them?

Thanks the update creskol :hello2:

Now go trap a badger

Guess you don't just trap a badger even if you wanted to restore a shaving brush :D Understand in the old days hunters filled their boots with charcoal for protection against potential bites while badger hunting.

You can purchase badger bristles set in epoxy to make shaving brushes. People turn fancy wood handles and set the bristles in them and sell them along with wood pens and wood wine bottle stoppers. I forget who sells the ready to go bristles but if you do a web search you likely can turn up a seller. They come in different diameters and you should be able to find one that will fit your handle. Then all you need is some two part epoxy adhesive and you got it restored.

Hey .. Thanks very much! I may have to go this route as they want 50 british pounds (or $ 81.33) to restore it. Thanks very much for the lead!
