Can a deep coin read as iron?

If a seated dime can read as an indian head due to depth, which i have found one to have done once. Could an old deep coin read in the iron range? Detector read outs are less accurate with depth, this is a generally accepted fact. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't know about this but I read that a deep nickle can read as silver to a Tesoro.

This can very well be the case and a lot has to do with the type metal, and composition of the surrounding soil and any electrical currents in the location. If you want to find the older coins, put duct tape over your dial.

i had them read iron, but it did not lock on, jump from iron to coin range, back n forth on each swing of the coil

Absolutely!
I have found a number of deep dimes that gave a low (iron) tone on my CZ6.
I have also dug up hundreds of nails that gave the same signal.
I thought that switching from the standard 8" coil to the 10" inch coil would reduce the problem. Wrong!

Hi Pete
You already know the answer to this question but it was nice for you to bring up the question. When I owned an Explorer 11 deep coins would read all over the screen(tone more reliable). Yes every VLF will do this. Why? Well the best answer I heard was this. The deeper you detect objects with a VLF the more ground iron mineralization your detector reads. So good items read toward the iron end with depth. This is why the dig it all folks have an advantage.

Mxt users in alaska hunting for gold nuggets would commonly hit a gold nugget that read in the iron range. Their solution was to dig a little to get the coil closer to the nugget. If it was a nugget the VDI number would increase and thus the target was non ferrous.

The above is for VLFs not PIs. PIs are not affected by ground mineralization in the same degree as VLFs. I can never confuse a coin with iron at any depth with my GS5.
