Was out hunting with John yesterday and had a find that actually made a connection with him. A deep signal turned out to be a twist-on metal cap, still attached to the broken neck of the spirits bottle. John's mother was employed by the distillery, The Calvert Distillery Co. in Relay, MD.

The distillery dates from the 1930s and is now closed, though Guinness plans to open a brewery on the site.

Closer inspection of the bottle cap revealed a patent of 1908245. A search on this patent number brought me to a link to the Basque Museum in Boise, ID. This museum is on Grove St. and in their collection is a whiskey bottle discovered beneath a home on Grove St. That bottle's cap is of the same design as mine and bears the same patent date. Cap may be from the 1930s or later.

Thx Art! Thought the cap is a unique design. I'm sure the Calvert descendants are rolling in their graves.

Thx kingskid1611! You're welcome. Crazy that my hunting buddy's mom worked there.

Wow, That's really cool and how you are able to link it all together for the history is fantastic! Good job!

Nice post
Enjoyed it

Thx Roger! You know that most caps we find are pretty nondescript, just blanks. Since the dig site is in Maryland, it is not surprising that my cap was from a local distiller. I actually thought the cap would be older than the 30's.

Thx Relicific! I think the connection to my hunting buddy was what spurred the research.

Nice find, love the connection of local history and the people who worked in the factories or as in this case the distilleries.

Thx Jamie. Baltimore has had its distilleries. Never knew what those four tall brick buildings were in Dundalk until recently.

Nothing's more disappointing than a pull tab or bottle cap but this one has some character.

McCDig the four tall buildings were once Seagrams and Four Roses when I was a kid. I grew up with the smell of distilling from the buildings. I live right across the railroad tracks from them. We used to sneak in the as kids, that stuff tasted nasty.
