Hi everyone,

New here - I am not sure if this has ever been brought up... Calvert Cliffs State Park, in Lusby MD.

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/calvertcliffs.html

When I was a kid I lived in MD for a year. And we lived walking distance to the cliffs - we would just walk around and find all kinds of fossils. I was told that we could find megladon teeth - but, I was never that fortunate - but, I have always dreamed of going back to see what I could find...

Has anyone been here and if you found anything - what did you find?

Thanks.

Sorry - reply to my own post - we lived at a place called Scientist's cliffs which is near Calvert cliffs. But, we could explore the cliffs when we were kids... I still want to go back...

I have not personally searched the cliffs because nowadays they are private property. Im pretty sure you can access the cliffs via water and search the beach but the cliffs are owned. I myself would like to try to dive the waters surrounding the cliffs. try this website: www.ecalvert.com let me know how you make out

The park is illegal to detect, dig or remove artifacts from. The scientist cliffs are illegal to dig also, unless you are a scientist. When I was a kid my uncle used to take us to both areas and dig for stuff.I was too young to appreciate his/our finds at the time.I was only 6 or 7 at the time.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. However, like tkdwoody says,I would try diving the areas around the cliffs.Of course that may be illegal too nowadays, who knows? :(

I'm disappointed... However, I am a certified diver... Maybe when I get back I will be able to search... I still want to go back...

Thanks.

We went to Calvert cliffs this year and picked up fossils, the only sign we seen was to stay off and not dig in the cliffs. The part I hated was the 2 mile walk in and the 2 mile walk out. The fossils wash up on shore, no sharks teeth though, most was brown pieces I have no clue what they are. One seems to be a join from something. The best piece my husband found was scallop shell, we went in sept. and there was not many people there. We plan on going back. There is also other beaches. I believe there is also a beach called brownie beach where you can pick up fossils.

You can fossil hunt on the open beach area

"Fossil Hunting - A hike of 2 miles is taken from the parking lot, along an unimproved trail to the cliffs/beach area. Visitors may hunt for fossils on the open beach area and keep what they find. Because of the constant erosion of the cliffs, access to the cliffs is no longer permitted."

TeddyB has the best answer so far. I did some research over the years. They are always changing but you can usually do something to hunt the beach, just no detectors. I would suggest the next time you are in the area check out the web site and give them a call. I bet you will be pleasantly surprised.

Was there last summer. When I went, the main park was closed for repairs. Had to park in a cornfield. The hike to the cliffs was wonderful though!!!! Went with a friend who wasn't thrilled (maybe because it was so stinkin' hot!), so I wasn't able to stay long. Found a few sharks teeth (and other ??) digging near the water. Great way to spend the day!!!
