The birdbath is a classic hiding place. Folks like to pick a spot that is easy to find again - and many of them want a location they can literally keep an eye on.
From Deek Gladson's great Sudden Wealth (1964): "A Minnesota doctor hid an estimated $35,000 to $50,000 in a birdbath near his home. A yardman suspected something was hidden in or near the fixture because he had been instructed repeatedly not to work near it. Nearly 25 years later, he casually related his suspicions about money or dope being hidden there. A treasure hunter heard the story and took action."

Thanks Old Bookaroo! That is a very interesting fact - people tended to bury things where they could easily find them - birdbath, under a special tree, etc. And they usually placed where it would be in sight of their favorite spot in the house.
