You can't imagine the feeling and excitement when you are holding this heavy chunk of metal that you just unearthed and start to wipe away the caked on dirt to reveal a "C". Then a little more dirt comes off and you see an "S" and realize that you have just found an elusive C.S.A. belt plate, or at least half of one.
I was detecting an old school house site along a carriage road path yesterday and I found this belt plate.

It's my first CW belt plate of any kind so I'm super excited about that not to mention its a Confederate plate. While it is a little disappointing that it is broken I would rather have half of one than none at all. I don't really have much hope of finding the other half but I will definitely go back and search some more. Thanks for looking.

That's complete BS. That doofus wouldn't recognize an authentic CS buckle if it bit him on the arse.

Having met the man and having huge respect for his passion and time invested as a historian for over 35 years "Mark Hall Patton" you really need to do research someone before you slam them. My opinion.

I was simply quoting a historian. I'm excited about the find. Get your head out of your "arse" and learn something

Since we are on Plates tonight, can anyone help me to identify these ( 2 ) items that was found on the Beach in May and June of 2013. All the Flat Buttons and coins are from the 1800's. Thanks goldnugget,

Any updates on this one? Just curious .. Thanks!

I followed JohnnyRebCSA's suggestion and contacted Larry Hicklin about the belt plate. He didn't have a lot to say but what he said was good news to me:

Looks to me like you have probably recovered your first Confederate Belt Plate.

Holy Smoke! Did he see pictures of it? I bought a button from him today, btw.

It would do you well to go to his relic shop sometime and look at what he has and pick his brain about relic hunting. Love hearing his experiences. He is simply amazing.

Not sure if what your saying? Yes, I sent him the same pictures that I posted here on the forum. BTW, someone from the forum sent Larry and email telling him that my belt plate has a date stamp on it. That is freakin amazing that someone here could see a date stamp from these pictures when I can't make one out while holding the plate in my hand?!? It's so funny how everyone wants to prove a great find is not what it is.

Upon closer inspection it looks like I can barely see a date stamped in the back of the plate but it is so faint I really can't be sure. I could us a brass brush and try to clean this area. Don't think it would matter much since there really isn't much value to the plate broken like it is.

I'm glad you got some solid feedback from Larry on the plate. He knows his stuff! Congratulations .. and thanks for the update! :icon_thumleft:

Coincidentally, I think it was you who originally said it was date stamped, so maybe somebody was just quoting what you said.

actually you have it backwards,Everyone is actually trying to prove that it is authentic, their has been so many fakes passed around for so long that it takes a lot of experience to prove a actual Military issued relic especially one like this of such rarity and it deserves all the respect of it's historical significance.

That is very true, Bill! .. Well said!

You are the one who needs to do research. The reference books are full of oval CS plates. I have dug two CS oval plates, a CS egg and a rope-border. Are you such a lemming that you blindly believe everything some "historian" tells you?

In regards to the original C.S. I hope for the diggers sake it's real ; and as for the Pawn Stars historian I've been told from a couple good sources that he has been wrong on a couple Civil War related items.

I'm curious about what appears to be stamping/lettering on the back - is that typical on original plates? It may well be, I've just never noticed it on others before . . .???
