Actually the back says a lot.

And now has a better chance of a solve.

See... from front it couild be anything from a small brooch to a lapel pin... to a tie tack etc.

NOW... with new pic... I can rule all of the above mentioned out.

A quick preliminary search did not produce any results to report...

All newer items.

Anyway... first impression is a "scarf clip"... or tie clip.. but ?

And for future... always post a pic of back... I for one can I.D. an item quicker from the back than I can the front most times.

It tells me "what" it was "used for" first...

This is what I use along with a / the description(s) in searching to narrow and find on items that I do not know already and am trying to figure it out as well.

The puzzlers like this ... AKA head scratchers tend to attract me. :)

Sorry I did not nail this one down for you.

PS... this is obviously a religious memento... either given or earned through church.

Based on the back, I'm leaning more towards a buckle of some sort.

Interesting find Duane.
As ARC already mentioned, 'scarf or tie clip, likely church related', probably dating to the 1920s - 30s based on the back construction.

I'm wondering if 'NOT' stands for 'Northern Ontario'... something or other? :icon_scratch:

Yes ... a buckle was also thought originally... forgot to state it.

Seemed a little light for a belt buckle though... but possible.

Also... the "hook" did not appear to be a traditional style to buckle... and age IMO does not go far enough back to put this in CW era.

Interesting find Duane, and nice recovery on a very fragile piece!

Buckle, I agree. An interesting question is the intended orientation. It would appear that the word "By" is to be displayed at the top when worn properly. This means that the strap it attached to, would have been worn vertically, as indicated by the attachment on the back where the strap goes. The only thing I can think of that's worn vertically are suspenders. This perhaps from a religious or organizational costume?

Appears to be Mormon!

Best wishes!

Reanm8er,
I agree it's a buckle, but I would say it's orienation would be "FAITH" at the top and the belt/strap would attach at the "BY" side.
That would put the cross at the top orientation.
This would, if worn as a belt, circle the body clockwise.
So a left hand belt??
It does look to light for a pants belt though, so maybe a sash buckle.
Sorry I'm no help on an ID of it though.
Very Cool find
Congrats

Latter Day Saints... As mentioned earlier , Mormans.

I'm not familiar with the group.

Mace,cross,wreath. Pretty specific.

One of the reasons I thought LDS, is the article in the link I posted, although rather long, details their missionary work around the world. That would explain how a relic from their faith cold wind up in Northern Ontario, all the way from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Huntindog, I do see and agree with your point regarding the cross. Excellent observation! So how would you wear a sash that narrow? A child's belt by chance?

Looks like half of a sash buckle, maybe Presbyterian in origin. Very cool!

Looks like half of a sash buckle, ...

Agree. Ladies sash/dress buckle. Circa 1900 - 1920.

I don't know about the slogan. The "faith, not fear" theme is pretty generic across Christian organizations.

I don’t think mormons do crosses . Interesting piece !

[The only members of the Church who wear the symbol of the cross are Latter-day Saint chaplains, who wear it on their military uniforms to show that they are Christian chaplains.]

I think the crown on this brooch is Victoria's crown
