This little piece seems very familiar to me, but I just can't recall.

Anyone?

Thanks!

I refer to the little, loopy, hooky piece, next to the shell.
The rest is for size reference. Doesn't appear to be broken
off anything.

Nice find. The hook looks like a gut hook used for small animals such as rabbits, beaver, or coons. Is the 'hook' sharp or look like it was sharp at one time? I have seen utensils very similar to that used as gut hooks but the handle looks different on the one you found.

I thought it was part of a horse harness?
I "know" I've seen that item here on TreasureNet before. :dontknow:

Yep, rein guide. Look at the old ad in the old post. Exact match.

It is NOT a rein guide. Please go back and re-examine the "old ad" (from a 1909 horse-equipment catalog). The brass loop with a hook on its top is shown in the catalog as item #381, a "latta swivel," which I think is a variety of gag swivel.

A gag swivel
Good description with picture in this old thread: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/385046-rein-guide.html

Yep. as I saw it, the "latta swivel" is the closest thing I've seen. Until proven differently, that's what I'll be labeling this one.

Thanks for the help.
By the by, the key in the pic was found within inches of the swivel. I'm assuming the ages are similar?
