Found this this weekend, looks like it was a button or some type of marker.
sorry for the poor quality pics, camera works great for long range but not so much for this.

My guess would be the head from a date nail.

Thanks for the info, if that is what it is, it had a thin square shank.

As you mentioned the thin shank it may be possible then that it was from a storm window numbering tack, like these: Storm Window Number Tacks, Acro Number Tacks -- Period Window Hardware.
