I found this recently while detecting the beach. It's slightly bigger than a quarter. I can't make out what it says but I think I see something wearing a crown on the center.

Anyone know what it is? Going to try to clean it up just a bit more and will post that tomorrow.

I can see the word "gilt" so id definitely say its a button with a broken shank.

My guess is that it reads Treble Gilt Standard Colour (the spelling indicating that it is British made.. in case the crown in the center weren't evidence enough). It would date to early-mid 1800's

Hi; It is a button. Dated from 1790 - 1820 ok. I say this because of the style and the fact that it says Treble Gilted. Treble Gilted stopped being used as a "term" after 1820. The term was modified after that date because the practice of dipping buttons in gold 3x became an industry standard ok. It has no value because of it's condition but it is still a neat find ok. The term "Treble Gilt" was used for decades after 1820. If the button were earlier than 1810 (or so) the lettering would be raised, rather than indented.
