Looks like brass not copper, and definitely not gold. Button, token, coin, take your pick, you'll never know for sure.

I agree with Iron Patch on brass. After cleaning it does appear to have two (or four) prongs. I think button :icon_thumright: Turret shank :dontknow:

I agree that it could be brass. The prongs look more like holes (2). Perhaps it was nailed to something. There may be letters in the center.

3 new pics after a little more cleaning.

I think it is time for the electrolysis.
Or the wire Dremel.

It is either an old button or some very old coin (irregular form). It was probably nailed to a door or something else!

Thanks for the replies! :D

I think that I see four holes.

It looks like it's getting cleaner too. I can't wait to see the final product. Breezie

Here are new pictures. Any idea what the symbol on the back of the button/coin may be?

The 4th spot wasn't a mark too?

Very nice and old button :icon_thumright: Anything on the front?

I tumbled it for 6 hours at low speed.

It does look like gold and you can see the copper showing thru on the edge.

It is 25mm in diameter and weighs 6g. It feels heavy for its size.

Does gold tarnish over time? I mean if it has been exposed to the elements for a few hundred years.

Moe, now that I've read you put it in a tumbler, I'll make my cleaning suggestion. (I'm sure I'll get some eye rolls on this one; lol) I'd use a Dremel on low speed with the multi-wire attachment and clean off the crud. Just be very careful. Gold can get rust, red, and brown spots when they are exposed to certain elements, and obviously this one has been exposed. Both copper and silver are added at the mint to give a gold coin more hardness, so that can explain the copper. Breezie PS: Thanks for the compliment Chuck! ;D
Dremel at low speed :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: on anything :o

There are only 2 holes.

There may be 2 marks (see pics below).

Hey Moe, to me the red circled item close to center in the first pic looks like either a club from a playing card or a clover, the others are not clear enough for me to guess at, also some of the things that are i think being called holes look more like filled in areas if you get my drift, hope this helps.

Chuck.
