Looks like a coin to me but harder to judge from a picture than in person.

Thanks.

Look at the bottom 3 pictures. What makes me think that it is a button/brooch are the two tiny prongs sticking out on that side.

Any ideas?

Could you clean it, and then post some other pics? Breezie

Im thinking coin too. it looks like prongs but they may be pieces of shell stuck to it. cant tell from the pic. See if someone knows a way to soak it in something It may be an OLD coin! :notworthy:

I don't see any prongs, it looks like a coin with rocks and shells embedded in it.

Maybe a side view pic would help.

Looking again the center really looks like what remains of a folded over shank. In an event if there's no detail there's not really anywhere to go with this.

Thanks for the replies!

Did they make buttons this big and thick out of copper?

It is not perfectly round so it makes think that it is very old!

Most buttons weren't that thick, but it is possible. I can almost always decide one way or the other seeing them in person, but this year I did have one that I just couldn't figure out. I have to be pretty sure before I throw something in my crusty coin box so I ended up calling it a button.

Have you soaked/cleaned it in warm perxiode? Breezie

the shank is in the center not those two far apart ones

I cleaned this coin a bit and now believe that it may be an old coin.

I can see some design starting to show. The two tiny prongs may be actually two holes someone made. Perhaps it was nailed to something.

I am going along with the pretty lady on this, that does look like gold, but then gold does not corrode does it? is it possible that it is covered in some kind of tar, maybe not corroded but covered so to speak? procede with caution on that coin!

Chuck.

I tumbled it for 6 hours at low speed.

It does look like gold and you can see the copper showing thru on the edge.

It is 25mm in diameter and weighs 6g. It feels heavy for its size.

Does gold tarnish over time? I mean if it has been exposed to the elements for a few hundred years.

Moe, now that I've read you put it in a tumbler, I'll make my cleaning suggestion. (I'm sure I'll get some eye rolls on this one; lol) I'd use a Dremel on low speed with the multi-wire attachment and clean off the crud. Just be very careful. Gold can get rust, red, and brown spots when they are exposed to certain elements, and obviously this one has been exposed. Both copper and silver are added at the mint to give a gold coin more hardness, so that can explain the copper. Breezie PS: Thanks for the compliment Chuck! ;D
