I found these some time ago.Two parts to the same button made from a 1853 dime and a 1845 half-dime found near the foundation of a icehouse. Must have taken someone a great deal of time to do all that engraving on the dime, don't you think? Not something i considered my best find but certainly a keeper.MM2

Describing those finds as "A Keeper" is a serious understatement.

Some of the 19th century engraving one sees on love tokens and buttons and such like that is remarkable, indeed. I've got some nice love token Seated dimes on my world-famous Holey Coin Vest.

Because of the craftsmanship, I would venture a guess that those coins are worth as much, if not more, than they would be if they were just normal unengraved, "undamaged" pieces.

That's really neat there Mtn. I enjoy that kind of stuff. To think that someone back then took 15 cents out of circulation to make a button is wild. That might have been room and board for a day back then or at least a shot and beer. Keep on diggin.

MountainMan, I'm so glad you joined Tnet. Those are incredible. :o

I'm confused though...are they one button or two?

What else do you have to show us?!? ::)

I like to think of those as "Love Tokens". They really are a work of art. Something I have never found.
Very nice!

Thank you for the comments everyone. I'm glad I joined this forum too Mona Lisa, learned quite a bit here already.Great bunch of people sharing the same interest and some great finds here. About the button, I believe it was a one piece because of the stem on the dime's back.It may have gone on his sleeve or was a shirt button. Thanks again for reading and HH-MM2

yeah i believe those to be FANTASTIC. To me, one of those coins is already an awesome find, add some stories too it, like someone engraving it and constructing buttons out of it is just amazing. One of the best finds i've seen on T-net, up there with the spanish silvers, gold bricks, sac's of diamonds, etc.
