NEPHEW found this button in an area where civil war buttons were found it is a plain flat button
the back mark is I believe is Italian. found where this exact button was sold online but no info of orgin

It's a French button. The phrase 'NE PLUS ULTRA' is a quality indication which broadly translates from french as "nothing better".

Those kinds of marks (also seen as 'NON PLUS ULTRA' and other variations) typically began appearing around 1840 and were used through until the late 1800s. Multiple makers used these phrases, so they can't be attributed to a particular source.
