Found this button today metal detecting around a late 1800s homestead on our property. Scoured the internet and can’t find anything similar. Any button experts on here? Back reads Scoville mfg co Waterbury. Front has bears, the Latin phrase prfoiling suprema, and one other that’s hard to make out 6814D229-9E37-43EE-91A1-CAF1EEDD6E10.jpeg

Welcome to Tnet.

The other motto is “Salus populi suprema lex esto” (the welfare of the people should be the supreme law) and it’s a Missouri State Seal button.

American buttons aren’t really my thing so I’ll leave it to someone who knows what they’re talking about to identify its usage and date (although it can't be earlier than 1822, because that's when the seal was adopted)

This motto was popular in the north during the CW period. I'll see if I can find it.

Although your button is correctly identified as being a Missouri State Seal button (worn by State Militia troops), it definitely was manufactured long after the end of the civil war. Its backmark says "SCOVILL MFG Co" -- note the underlined lower-case letter o. That exact backmark is shown in a photo in the McGuinn-&-Bazelon book on dating buttons by their backmark, which says your button's backmark dates from 1870 to 1920.

I see you are a brand-new member, so I'll say, Welcome to TreasureNet and its "What Is It?" forum... the best place on the internet to get unkown objects CORRECTLY identified. :)
