The mark appears to be "Rich Orange Colour" and is what's called a "quality mark," referring to the button's gilt finish. It probably dates from around 1820-40, and may be of British manufacture, as indicated by the spelling "Colour"; however, I believe that some American firms may also have used the same spelling.

Oh. Never mind. PBK does it again.

I've found a few of those. Really like the sites where they turn up, too, 'cause those buttons are a signpost to nearby large cents, Seated and Bust coins, and Spanish reales... oh my!

I think the last time I found one of those, a purty nice 1839 dime came up. Or maybe it was the spot where my 1837 large cent came up. Whatever.
