Happy New Year Everyone!

This past week ive been digging in a feild where there was a house site up untill the 1920s. The house is on 1873 and 1883 maps of the aria. I belive the house to be alot older than what I originally thought! I found 4 (Colonial?) Flat, tom back, Hemisphere, and curved buttons! Today I pulled out this beautiful military button! Can anyone help me with ID and dates? Any ( and I mean ANY) information on these buttons would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Button 1 - I believe it is a military button. WW2 era?

You've got a very broad range of dates on your button finds from that site, makes me think there may have been an earlier structure there. :icon_scratch:

Button #1 1780 - 1820
Button #2 1810 - 1840
Button #3 1840 - 1870

Best of luck on your return visit, looks like you're on a great site Gavin.
Dave

Yes, #1 is a US Army "Great Seal" button, they started making them about 1903 if I remember correctly. The others are correct on the dates. Good stuff.

Button #5 is a Civil War period/Victorian period button. That type of manufacture was invented about 1835. I found one on a house site where the house burned in the 1870's.

Number 3 is most definitely a tombac button from the mid-late 1700s.
Tombac is an alloy with high copper content and a small amount of zinc.
