It's a colonial period flat button. They are civilian but are often dug in civil war camps sites. I've even dug them in early 1900's logging camps. Back then they used things as long as they could and a person wouldn't have thought twice about putting a flat button on coveralls or 1830's flower buttons on a dress.

vayank is right. Our good ole boys in Gray often had them on their uniforms. Breezie

How can you tell it is a colonial button rather than post colonial? :icon_scratch:

Good question and a hard one to answer if you mean all the types of buttons. But on the copper or brass buttons like yours. The earlier ones will be thin like yours. The later ones (early 1800's) will be thicker and more uniform. They will have a different type of shank too. I think it's called an anvil shank but I can't remember for sure. Getting senile I guess. American makers didn't start marking there buttons until about 1810 or so while the British started backmarking theirs years earlier. By the way yours is made I don't think it will have a backmark. Man I am not good at explaining this stuff. I hope this is of some help.

This looks like a small Dandy button with missing gilt 1790s :icon_thumright:
