JESSUP & CO N.Y. - Clothiers in NY City during at least the mid 1870s. (Opening in May 1874 and filed for bankruptcy in 1875, the business continued on... at least through 1878 when I found another article about the business).

May have been a button or just as likely a hem weight like Le Beep mentioned.
