Hey guys, I'm on the road and dug this button yesterday and don't have access to any of my books. It's brass. Its a cuff size button, however I don't have my calipers to verify exact mm size... I would GUESS its somewhere between 15 and 18mm. Based on the mold seam on the back, it is cast, and the shank appears to be applied. The backmark is unlike anything I've seen... its another circle of stars similar to the front. Take note, there are 14 stars around the eagle. Thanks to Scrappy who pointed this out to me and Vermont was the 14th state to enter the Union in 1791, so this button should date after that year.

I'm dying to figure out what this thing is and would really appreciate a Alberts or Tice button reference number. Thanks in advance for all the help guys.

I don't know for sure but I would guess war of 1812. That is one cool button whatever it is!

After some googling, it appears the style of this button is close to the "US Officials Diplomatic Service Button" - Alberts: OD 7. The similarities are the eagle surrounded by the same style stars, as well as stars on the backmark, however the similarities end there. OD 7 has 17 stars around the eagle and is a coat sized button. Mine is cuff sized with 14 stars. If the stars denote states and Vermont entered the Union and 1791, followed by Kentucky in 1792, then it should be easy to peg the date range of the button. That is if I can get an ID on it!

Here is the similar OD 7 one.
