A Half dollar weighs 12.5 grams, so 18000 of them would weigh 225 kg (a hair under 500 lbs). It would have been quite a bit of work to bury that, or to dig it up. I'm not surprised the thieves didn't try to pull the whole barrel out of the hole.

Would be a great place to go swing a detector. They're bound to have dropped a few.

Sorry, just a typo. I meant half dollar -- weight is correct, post has been updated.

And agree, someone knew it was there and helped themselves. Inside job, maybe.

No so. Math that again. Why such a big drum for ~30 pounds? and a fairly small volume?

I Would also Surmise it took a good amount of time,
even if more then one. a lot of Buckets back & Forth involved :coffee2:
they either got lucky. and thought the house was abandoned. or they knew she was away

after Looking Closer they had 6 Months

after a little more research her and her husband may have been living in Michigan during that Time.
anyone could have gotten lucky or she may have even told someone in michigan about her Stash.

most people that hide money, do not keep it all in one place. good chance there are other caches there, in my opinion.

Personally I Believe that many Halves would take up the Volume of several 5 Gallon Water Jugs.

but even if they had confidence no one would catch them.
the odds are good at least 1 half fell and even if saw fall, ignored
as not important. perhaps many more fell if they were surprised by the cache and did a mad scramble
to grab and get out :laughing7:

she still owns both properties .

Thy don't list the Date the Photo was Taken
