Bunch Of Pics From A 1700's Site

Hey everyone, Not alot to show for this time. Grounds are frozen up for the most part around here now. I needed to get out over the weekend though and get some picks for a few of the stories I'm writing right now.

You know me though I wasn't going to leave the detector at home. I dug were I could get at for about 1 hr and a half. On the way to the site I eye balled a v-nickle on the road. Thought it was going to be a good day with a sign like that.

We have pounded this site alot so I don't expect much when going there. I just figured it would be a good place to take some picks. Picked up a few wheats there though.

I didn't get picks of everything. My son wasted alot of my film before even getting to the place. There were about 5 or 6 more cellar holes and wells all around me. I just didn't have film to get it all.

It will give you a idea of the site though. I found early large cents here and a 1787 new jersey copper. The pic of the building isn't the 1700's dwelling. That's in the back of me but you can't see it.

I think this place was used as a railroad camp also in the late 1870's. But it had early pioneer history before that. They just built onto the site later over the years.

I am pretty much now waiting for the thaw here. It got into the 40's Saturday but like I said ground is froze up in alot of the spots.

Spring will be here soon and I had a really good winter. So I'm not complaining. This just gives me more time to research and heal up a little bit.

Hope you all like the picks

HH Jer

Re: Bunch Of Pics From A 1700's Site

Thanks alot guys. Yeah there were some nice finds at this site. Flat buttons large cents. One I found looked like it was dropped the day it was minted. Notice in the pics how many briars we had to tear down to get the the area's we wanted to hunt.

My son took all the shots of me. I took the rest. He did pretty good for being 5 and never taking a pic before. Only problem was I had like 4 of the same shot because I couldn't tell if he held the button in long enough.

Well he did and my film of 24 ran fast down there. I wanted to get pics of the wells and the actually piles of rocks and foundations that are around me. You can't see them but there all over.

I''ll get some more in the future. Just thought in these cold temps us north east guys could appreciate them.

Great pictures!! ;)

How lucky you were to find that nickle without digging!

Must be a good sign of more things to come!

;)

Re: Bunch Of Pics From A 1700's Site

Very cool place. It's neat to see the house still up. Most of the time all that's left are a few stones. Is the land part of a park or private?

Nate and I finally found an old homesite similar to this only doesn't quite have the age. The site we recently dug was late 1800s to early 1900s. It really gets exciting when you realize you are the first to hit the site.

Weather should be good in another week or so. Then we'll be in full detect mode. ;) Good luck.

Oh yeah, and you just find a V nickel on the road?!!! :o :o Wow, sounds like metal detecting heaven.

A site like that makes my mouth water lol. Looks like a really wonderful place to hunt. And your son really does a nice job takng pictures, when my son was five he would have been snapping shots of a worm or ant more than likely. Congrats on the treasures from the past. Happy Hunting Jef.

Re: Bunch Of Pics From A 1700's Site

Dang Jer, your killing me here! What an awesome site! Are the stones at the house cut stones or bricks used to build it? They look like hand cut stones and the window supports look like a typical old German house would have used, German style anyway. I won't be surprised if you pull up some old German relics there. I would be willing to pull and cut away the briars to hunt a site like that. Nice you have your son involved with you! HH and I look forward to your finds there, good luck as well, Mike

You know what Jerdfx...I was at that site a month ago....and found all kinds of goodies....If you believe that I'll tell you another one ! lol Only joking....Just looking at that place makes me want to get out and dig, even with the temp in the single digits.... You have a nice site there and the weather is looking pretty good... Good luck going back.... ;D

Re: Bunch Of Pics From A 1700's Site

Thanks alot for all the replies. You all wanna know something. It took me 2 yrs to figure out this site held treasure. Everytime I visited it It was so trashy and I wasn't willing to just start digging away.

I tried to cherry pick it on numerous occasions but had minimal luck. I finally a few months back I said to myself there has to be something here. Then it happened. Flat buttons started coming up. I found 3 large cents there. One 1787 new jersey copper and a ton of other stuff.

It has gotten slow now but you can still find some metal in the area. There are old wagon roads and other sites in the woods. The creek needs hit along with the road. I just keep all these sites building up and alternate them.

Seeker, You didn't do that great of a job if you were there last month LOL. Thanks for all the misses.

Mike, The stones look to be cut probably by hand. The building looks old because it has that old mortar in the stones. Very strange building. One floor when you walk in and a basement below. Every time I look into it I get a mental picture of a group of railroad workers all hovered together sitting and lying around the floor.

There was a railroad line about 150 yards away. I think this site was occupied after a very early settler was there before that. Alot of work went into this site. Like I said before there's like 6 or 8 different foundations and buildings all dating to a different era.

The site Mirage is in a secluded area off a semi high way. No parks or anything around. It's a site I spotted out of the corner of my eye hidden amongst the pines. I'm glad no one else spotted it over the years. It's not easy to see. Near impossible at 50 mph.

It's not a uncommon to find old coins on the surface. I have found alot that way. Either the detector found it first or I saw it before I got to it. It was a nice surprise and gave me hope the whole road and trail back there may have stuff on it.

As soon as this weather breaks I'll have some good stuff to show you all. Got most of my stories done now so I'm feeling a relief. Any one who has written for publication knows what I'm talking about. The guidelines are tough and things have to be done correctly.

Hope the reward for all the work I put into it will pay off once I start getting the mags. I'm sure at that point I'll forget about all the time spent doing it.

Thanks again everyone

HH Jer
