Hi all!
I'm a medal detector novice who found a bullet today while trying my dad's detector out for the first time.
Found this bullet about 1 or 1 1/2 feet down (my assumption based on the deformation is that it was shot there) in the sand out on a rural beach. There used to be a town out in this area back in the mid to late 1800s to the 1930s when it was destroyed to put in an Air Force Base. People do still hunt out there though.
My dad measured the diameter of the bullet with a mechanical caliper at 13mm and it weighs about 27-28 grams on a kitchen scale.
Based on weight/diameter and my research on wonderful Wikipedia, it could only be an .50-90 Sharps, .50-110 Winchester or maybe a .50-70 Government assuming that we couldn't catch the .08mm extra diameter with a mechanical caliper.
But, I'm a bit curious because I can't find any good images of the bottom of any of those bullets online, and mine has some strange markings as well as no obvious cannelure (maybe hidden by the deformation?). In the center of the bottom it looks like there is the number 15 pressed into the bullet. The last image also shows a strange crimp or ridge or something on the side of the bullet, and it appears to have a similar ridge on the opposite side.
Is my identification of the bullet correct and it is possible that it is 80-100ish years old, or might it be a more modern bullet?
Thanks!!
