Buckleboy's January/February Wrap-Up!--UPDATED!!

FOXHOUND'S PHOTOS ADDED BELOW IN THIS POST, AND SPILLING OVER INTO REPLY #17.

Hello All,

The Iron Brigade has been busy these first two months of 2008! The weather has NOT been cooperative, and we've lost several weeks due to frozen ground, ice storms, and snow. :( So unlike December--which was relatively mild here--it took me two months to fill my display case with goodies. Just when we thought that the diggin' couldn't get any better after all the Seated coins, Large Cents, and old relics in the weeks preceding Christmas--2008 has filled the cases with Reales and mid-1800's Militaria. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

And Foxhound's Finds (The rest of these GREAT photos are in reply #17 on down in the thread. I couldn't fit them all in here.)

Re: Buckleboy's January/February Wrap-Up!--UPDATED!!

It's always more impressive to see site finds all together. Very Awesome. Is this from more than one homesite?

Really makes me want to look for those older places more. Love the shield nickel. Great shape too. ;D

Is that a 1781 reale? Looks pretty good. ;D

What is the round item with the person on it? (No, not the coins ;D )

Can you tell me something about the 2 bigger buttons in pic #3...they're really neat, I don't recall ever seeing any like those.

The round item with the figure on it is a decorative metal jar lid, from best I can tell. When I first found it, I just thought it was a disc--didn't even know that there was a design on it. After some light brushing and some detailed toothpicking, this was the end result. The button below it depicts a cornucopia. It is a two-piece button, along with the button that is in between the two. Neither of these is a type I have recovered before.

Here's a little more info on the forked key--from the "What is it?" threads:

Pictured in the photos are finds from 5 house sites (two of these were just December sites that we were still in the process of working out this year). The finds from those two were quite thin by January. Three of them were new sites for us during these first two months of 2008.

The Real is indeed a 1781. The Half Real just above it is 1774. I was QUITE PLEASED to find the 1781--it is in fabulous shape. Most of the Reales that are dug are badly worn. Some are just flat silver discs of the right thickness :( Those coins pulled some Heavy Duty Use during the early years of our country--before the Philly Mint made enough coinage to supply the need.

Thank you all for your wonderful replies.
