Hello all,

I found this buckle on an old farm but cannot find a similar style one to identify it. I am guessing it is a shoe buckle, but cannot be sure. Any thoughts of purpose and age? Thank you.

Oh...and this big circular piece with a broken piece was at the same location. No clue what this is.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1560482746.361848.jpg

Your buckle is likely a knee buckle, used to hold breeches cuff around the knee in the 1700's.

The round object looks like a horse bridal rosette. I don't know for sure age on it but probably mid-1800's or before.

Great finds!

Thanks so much! I didn’t know about knee buckles! The rosette ID occurred to me but your confirming that thought is reassuring. Thanks for your time and ideas!

Love that knee buckle you found Kim... VTColonialDigger really knows his stuff! :notworthy:
To me it looks like you also found the 'back potion' of a bridle rosette?

Is there anything on the front? :icon_scratch:

Many thanks! The front of the possible rosette was totally plain and no evidence of anything being attached to it. Here is the other side...ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1562770714.485454.jpg
Thanks for the inquiry.

I have been trying to find the history of knee buckles and photos/drawings/depictions of their actual use but it is hard to find. I want to display it at a local town celebration.

I believe it is a knee buckle (1720 - 1790, dates may be off). Great Find! :occasion14:

I love it when a thread comes together.

Very nice knee buckle. Rest assured that by 1820 (probably more like 1800), no one was wearing knee buckles anymore.
