I have an idea of what this is but I am hoping someone will know for sure. Looking for approximate age and use of this buckle, please. It is not magnetic. I think pewter or brass/copper. I have not cleaned the buckle at all so the dirt is hiding the details of the small designs (maybe flowers or stars).

Do you have a date for that French Patent? Also, I'd like to see the Patent's diagram, if it is available. I'm asking because a friend dug a marked CH Guyot suspenders strap-adjuster and he firmly believes a Confederate soldier was wearing it.
I dont think it CW era. I tried to do a search on French patents but I dont know how to do it. :dontknow: All I know Depose means patent in French.
Looking at the advertisement, I see the two pieces I posted do not fit together as I assumed. (I've never worn suspenders :D )
hence, it is not a buckle....
Great Post Everyone

If you look at the one in Mike's pic, it does not match either. Look at the stars.
Mikes is a 6 point star or flower and may be an imitation. :dontknow: I think all the others are 5 point stars and are most likely Guyots but we cant be sure. They advertise 2 million made anually and there will be some differences over the years..

G also found one . http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,275333.0.html

I thought about that too. Guyot was a Frenchman so maybe its also a Guyot. :dontknow:

Quote from the other thread: Annual sales of over 2,000,000. Huh, that’s pretty impressive. I don’t know if Ch. Guyot suspenders were top-of-the range things in 1907 at their 60 cents a pair but I am quite confident that they were not the cheapest ones. I read somewhere that people in America who could not afford this make bought their imitations at 15 cents instead. BTW, not only Americans loved them. This French company Ch. Guyot was very global. Here is their poster titled ‘A man of style won’t wear anything but Ch. Guyot’. It shows a bunch of nations they used to export their suspenders to.

A buddy dug both halves Sunday (with the stars)at a site that has been under water for over 40 years and a site that produced nothing post 1860.....

Mine was found at a lake in the water. On the reverse side you can see the stars.

I've done extensive research on CH Guyot suspender-parts in the past. Insofar as I could find, they date from the latter-1800s through the early 20th-century. I found no evidence at all that they go back as far as the civil war era ...despite some claims by Ebay sellers.
