I know it is one piece of a two piece buckle but would like to know more about it, date range and the maker. It measures an inch and a 1/4 across. Much appreciated!

Wallhangers,

Your find is the outer wreath portion of a two-piece stamped brass Tongue & Wreath buckle, dating from the 1850's. The markings of
** S.H. DOUGHTY ** NEW YORK, is for Samuel H. Doughty.

Samuel H. Doughty was quite the dealer in belts, women's clothing, and fancy goods, as well as vests and leather goods. I've found him listed as early as 1848. He was also an exhibitor at the great New York Exposition in 1853-1854

Samuel H. Doughty even held some U.S. Patents a couple decades later for women's clothing accessories.

Buckles of this style were very popular, being worn on cloth, elastic, varnished, and leather belts. Women and children were the principal market, yet men are also noted to have worn the smaller fancy buckles as well.

Thanks CC for the ID and extra details. Seeing the pics of them in use is cool 8)! Only other question would be if you know what the design on the tongue would be (if any). Thanks again!

You are quite welcome wallhangers. :)

In regards to the matching tongue for this particular wreath, we can only speculate, as I have yet to find a perfect match. Other similar small fancy Tongue & Wreath (T&W) buckles with the round center disk, are generally plain and smooth. With the small fancy oval shaped center T&W buckles though, designs such as flowers or star shapes are more commonly seen.
