Found yesterday in the desert near home. My first and probably the only one Ill ever find. A glycymeris shell pendant from the Gulf of California. Its from the Hohokam period, which means its at least 500 years old, from about 1450 AD or before. These are actually pretty rare, Ive only ever heard of archaeologists finding them. It was ground down around the edge to make it more rounded, and then grounded flat on top to make the hole. I also found that tipless arrowhead, a tiny little thing.

The last photo shows the shell pendant with a stone pendant I found a few years ago and another little shell bead I found a couple months ago. All Hohokam period stuff.

Thanks. Im still in awe about it. You see a lot of Indian stuff around here, most of which I wouldnt consider very special or worthy of taking home, so I was shocked to find one of these just sitting there on the desert floor. Ive gotten lucky and found a few points here and there, a grinding stone or two, and that red pendant you saw, and Ive inherited some more artifacts from family and friends and purchased others, but this is the first whole shell artifact Ive ever come across. Ive seen tiny broken pieces of shell jewelry only two or three times, and have another piece that an old family friend gave me, but thats it. Its mostly broken rocks (lithic debris) and little brown or red pottery sherds you see out here, not exactly museum quality stuff.

I'd love to find something different like that I've never found any beads or pottery really

Pottery seems to be a much more difficult find up north and back east. Out here in the desert a very common find. I dont know if its just environmental conditions, it being a desert down here and all, or if its just that the Native American tribes down here were known for making a lot of pottery, and using it for trade and in ceremony, in addition to regular household uses.
