Hi everyone, I need some help deciphering what I found today. We have been detecting a late 18th century early 19th century colinial site and have pulled up various buttons and artifacts. I found this today and was wondering if this was a piece of a skeleton key. What do you think? Thanks, -Mike-

Welcome!

With no idea of the size or material (magnetic?) it is hard to say what it is.

PS- you have set the bar pretty low if your bucket list includes a worthless piece of a broken key.

apologize for wasting your time. A skeleton key has been on my list for some time, not to mention could help with knowing what was going on with the settlement/ site at the time as there are no visible foundations. Certain things play "key" roles when digging. Even if money isnt involved in artifacts.

There’s always a chance! The shape certainly matches the typical design of keys in late 1700s-early 1800s. Identifying the type of material would be ideal though. Weight/ density would be key

Hard to tell from the pics it looks to be to flat for a key but hard to tell with 1 picture and not having it in hand. Any other finds from there to help give you a time reference.....Tommy
