🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Bronze sword/dagger kicked up onto a beach from a storm.

Can anyone identify this bronze sword/ dagger that was kicked up on a beach and located while metal detecting on a beach in Pemaquid Maine? It was brought to a local museum who examined it and believed it was really old. There are islands not far from this location that have possible Norse inscriptions on the rocks. A Norse coin was also located north of this location on another beach. Can this be of this era?

As far as a dagger? 2-1/2" isn't much of a griping area.

That is the reason I tought it looked like a "push knife' which is also called a "push dagger"

I gotta wonder why it isn't all deeply green if it is very old. Not like any harpoon head I have ever sen and also not like any push daggers. Fish are killed with billys, not pointy objects. Curious item for sure.

Google "Goddard Coin" - found in Maine in 1957 but the provenance is somewhat uncertain.

I don,t know,but I like it.If i had found it I,d give it a place of honor to display it and dream about what it could be.

The handle is approximately 4”. I’ll measure it and get back. It has a small groove gouged into it near the hilt area. I’m guessing it was used to tie rope to and wind around the frame to make it more comfortable. no holes for pins or screws for handle. Also another interesting thing, in the bronze there is a small area that looks like lead. I sent all pictures to the state historic archeologist and he is examining it. His first reaction was European in nature and quite old.

Yep the gripping area is like 2 3/4”. A sailor friend examined it and thinks a piece of wood was used as a handle. The wood would have been grooved out to fit over the metal frame and then wrapped with rope To secure it on.
