There are other sword pommels in the book with lions heads but this seems to be the best match. A clearer pic would help but the closest I can find is an American light dragoon saber (#14 Neumanns pg 256). It looks like a good candidate for your piece. If so, great find! Check out the pics & description from the book. If this is it fantastic find!
I just realized that you are in the UK so this ID probably does not apply considering it is a US sword but you never know. I just heard about someone digging a George Washington inaugural button over there recently!
 

The sword pommel is a great find for sure! But hey, he found a beautiful Bronze Age axe head and a spearhead frag! You can't go older with a detector! These relics are so rare, most hunters in the old world can only dream of a Bronze age find.... Big congrats here too!
 

Like I said on the What is it thread...it could be a Dog/lion head pommel, but it could also be a walking stick top.
