Man am i stoked!! i went hunting for clad at a high school built in the 60s this morning not really looking for anything old when i get a 50 cent piece hit at 4 inches on the soccer field. out pops a 1850 LARGE CENT!
only two ways it could have gotten there! 1-some kid dropped it out of his pocket while playing soccer or 2- the man who owned the land in the 1800s dropped it while plowing his field! there is a farm that was owned by a man named TALLEY a half mile away that was built in 1814.(it is on my list of places to hit!) i also came away with:

1-925 silver ear ring
5-washington quarters
7- roosevelt dimes
2-jefferson nickels
4- memorial cents
1- english coin about the size of a silver dollar.it says ELIZABETH II. DG. RFG.FD on it and is dated 1977. anyone have an idea of what it might be? i am going to go to my fathers house and borrow his scanner so i can post a picture of the large cent and the english coin.i will try to post a pic later.
one other thing...........the large cent has that green corrosion on the back of the coin and a little on the front (you can clearly read the date though) i guess i should just leave it in this condition or should i find a way to clean it up? thanks for looking!! ;D

Hollow,

what a day. Congrat.

My suggestion, leave the coin the way it is. Perhaps wash it up a bit but otherwise I would not "clean" it. You could take it to a coin dealer and get their opinion, perhaps they could clean it up if that is what you want.

Again, outstanding finds.

have a good un............

Congrats on that oldie! I havent found any 19th century coins since last summer :-\ You could try a "Coin Conditioner" if you really wanted to make it look better.

Congrats on the nice haul

thanks for the nice replies! i still cant believe that this thing was in the middle of a school soccer field! im sure this school has been picked over by other detectorists for years. i was just damn lucky to stumble across it and then not to damage it as i was digging.it really was the last thing i was expecting to find at that site!

Congratulations, red! I know how I felt when I found my first and only large cent. As soon as I picked it up, I jumped up and down screaming. I knew from it's weight and size that it was something I've never seen before. I can't wait to see the picture.

Congrats Hollowpoint! 1850 is awesome - I'da jumoed for joy and crapped my drawers, lol! You never know what you're gonna find, and where you'll find it! Congrats again, can't wait to see the pics!!

Way to go hollowpoint! A very nice coin to break it with too.

I broke it with the 1887 Franc in my avatar.

I always consider breaking the century mark a good day. You did it by 50 years. Way to go!

What a way to break it!!! Great find!!!

Next time you feel like breakin the century mark, lets try not to be so sloppy, and keep it a little closer to a century. OK? ;D WTG!!! HH

Wow!!!
Those are some really nice finds for a school yard, WTG!!!
I'd have to go with the farmer dropping it, but ya never know...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Way to go. I love the feeling you get and the big grin when you find a 100 year old coin. Still waiting for a 200 year old one. Good luck.

thanks everyone for the kind words! unfortunately i will have to wait on the picture as i have no scanner or camera and my dad doesn't know how to hook up his new scanner :'(.........i guess you really do never know whats going to come out of the ground on a given day. it sure didn't have any business being in that soccer field!! i was hoping that maybe i would find some pottery shards or square nails around where the coin came from.......something to indicate that there was once a structure there and hopefully maybe a few more coins but i found nothing of the sort. i have to believe that this was a corn field back in the day and this coin was just randomly lost out of someones pocket.its really pretty unbelievable to me when i think of the chances of just stumbling over it!
