broke 1800 in a "Large" way Update??? question???

Finally broke into the 1800's this morning. A chilly morning hunt at the old high school in Pinckney MI This school dates back to the 1920's, so I thought there would be old stuff...But, I didn't expect this: 1854 Liberty Head (braided hair) Large Cent!
I couldn't tell what it was when I dug it (8"deep) because it was pretty encrusted with dirt. I didn't see a reeded edge so I was hoping! I slipped it in a special pocket in my pouch and continued to hunt. Well, I tried to continue, but the suspense was killing me. I was not far from home so my curiosity won out.
Back at home I ran some warm water on it and could start to make out the ONE...

Oh yeah, I got some clad and junk...and a 1945 wheat too.

HH, Jim

The reverse of this coin is 90 degrees from the front! Usually when you rotate (how do I say this?) top to bottom, the reverse reads horizontally, this one, the "ONE CENT" reads vertically. Is normal for a large cent? Can't seem to find out anything in my searches. Thanks, Jim

Thats the way to crack the 1800's barrier!! Sweet find!

Re: broke 1800 in a "Large" way Update??? question???

I just read your post again. Congratulations once more on the LC. Also for your set of 3 variety pop tops. I wonder how many actual varieties there are?
Back to your Large Cent, I believe the vertical? (I assume you meant horizontal) reverse would be the result of the reverse die being placed wrong or was possibly loose and it wandered to the 9 o'clock position. In any case, I would definitely make it a keeper at least until you can find out how rare it is. I wouldn't rely on the opinion of a coin dealer either - they would down play it because it may be a possible acquisition. Do a little research on it. See if you can post your question on a coin forum. As far as myself, I would consider it a rarity because that is not how the coin should have been minted. It is definitely an error. How big of one, I don't know. Good luck on your research.

================
MichiganRob,
I don't think that coin on ebay is off by 90 degrees if you go by the photos. Maybe 40 degrees. I am not an expert but 90 degrees would put the opposite side sideways instead of up and down. Now I could be totally wrong but that is my assumption. I'm only going by what I learned in High School regarding angles. I have seen quite a few coins in my time where both sides didn't match up but they were only slightly off. 90 degrees is taking the 12 o'clock position and turning it to the 9 or 3 o'clock position. In my opinion, the pictures on that auction don't show this. I'm only going by how I relate to 90 degrees - I could be totally wrong.
In any case, I now have something I have to put on my to-do list - investigate this error.
HH and here's hoping we find some 90 degree off coins.

Thanks for the link MIrob. However, I called a local coin dealer and he said: an 1854 large cent in good to fine condition was worth 8 to 12 dollars! (a common date?) with the rotated die, add 2 dollars. He said this was somewhat common in these coins! He was very gracious and did not ask me to bring the coin in for inspection. This makes me wonder about the scammers on e-bay, trying to get someone to pay $500 for a coin worth 10 - 15 bucks!

My intent was not to sell this coin - (I would never sell my first 1800's coin) - but just trying to find out more about it! This coin has occupied my thoughts for the past three days! Just thinking about how it came to be dropped there, what was there at the time, ect. No matter what the real world "value" of this coin, it is invaluable to me!

Luck in the Hunt everybody! ...I can't wait to get out there again this weekend, Jim
