I found these two coins and small decorative piece today on the Brandywine battlefield. The small piece is clamshell shaped and has either the number 10 (cut in half) or a letter S. I rang really high on the AT Pro. The coin looks similar to a British Copper Half-Penny around 1690-1700, but I can find an exact match online. On the side with the seated figure, I can see the TAN for BRITAN. The NIA is weird though. You can clearly see the N in between the hand and head of the seated figure (left of the head). The IA is on the other side of the head to the right of the staff. I can't find any online examples where the NIA is split up like that. On the opposite side, I believe I can make our GV or CV to the left of the head and what looks to be TIV on the right. Hoping someone a lot more knowledgeable about coins will know what this is. I know the small coin is a shield nickel.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Icewing. I think you nailed that one.

I forgot to mention that the coin is 28mm. That seems to fit the half penny theory.

Nice, And Clamshell is correct, it's a broken crotal bell. That area was settled very early, I used to dig the Brandywine battlefield decades ago.

Thanks! I just found a match online as well. It is a William III Halfpenny, 2cd Issue, dated 1699. The date is in the legend rather than the normal spot. Knowing where it is now and with better magnification, I can make out the 1 and the last 9 in the date.

Shoot! You found it few minutes before me. I was wrong and went back...

Yours may be too toasted to tell, but there's an error coin for that year, where instead of using an "A", they used an upside down "V".
Your coin kinda looks that way.

Thanks ToastedWheatie! That is interesting about the error and I think you may be right about it being too toasted to know for sure. It looks like an A on the left but a V on the right side of the coin. Thanks again!
