Brass Seal or paper weight?

found detecting, has a cross hand cut on one side, and a x on the other side, and a D on handle. It is brass and appears to be sand cast. It looks like a large wax seal type thing but the bottom is smooth. any ideas?

a guess maybe a heavy duty vintage leveling bolt/foot

Looks like a benchmark or geodetic marker w/o the writing.

I've never seen one that wasn't anchored and google image search isn't being too helpful.

I agree, it appears to be an old survey marker, that type is usually set into stone or concrete. You can still buy them today....
