Brass object found at home site dating from early to mid 1800s. It is 5" long, but both ends have obviously been broken off. It is nearly 1/4" thick at the area of the hole and rapidly tapers to each end. The oblong hole measures about 2" X 5/8", but tapers from one side to the other. There are a series of tiny triangular-shaped indentations, at about 1/8" spacing, surrounding the hole on one side of the object. I was thinking door latch hardware or possibly equestrian related? Couldn't possibly be part of a sword handguard could it (wishful thinking).

The site is/was very rural and remote, so no gas lines. However, the "handle" idea does sound reasonable. Maybe in some other application? Could explain the broken ends.
