Need help with this as well. Solid brass with some type of hook/s on back (broken). Cape pin? European made?

Yes, I'd say that could be right because the back "attachments" don't seem to match each other... but I but they would be close to the remains of a cover. It just seems too cool not t be something real cool. Interesting find.
Unbelievable! Now I've located someone who has found this exact piece - on another treasure forum, and is trying to identify it. I'm hoping to connect and get more info on his and maybe it will help us "tell the tale"... thanks for all the input so far! FYI- I also found a partial pocket knife with "Robert E Lee" cut into the brass at this site. I'm guessing from a soldier that may have served under him??cuse said:A better view of the post(s) on back. The upper post is broken off at the base. That's incredible! Mystery solved and thank you so much for the pics! Mine, i believe, was from a small confederate campsite where we also found an etched "Robert E. Lee" pocket knife and block "I" button among other unique items.
