Omigod!!!! I think I know!!! I keep feeling like I've seen one before, and just had a revelation. I'm going to post this and then go look for a pic, but really think this could be it: The arm on an electric can-opener!!!! It's got all the right moving parts...What do you guys think???

can't find a great pic, but here are a few: the arm with the knob would flip up (flat side of knob would have a magnet), flip it down on to the can lid. When the can is open, the lid sticks to the magnet. Does ths make sense?

ok, one more try before bedtime...this is good...couldn't put my finger on the idea I had, but that machinist table idea was sort of close....part of an antique surveyor's scope or nautical sextant...see a random pic...would definitely be made of brass. Gonna look for specifics, but it's got to be something surveying/drafting related (or can-opening related ::) )

Tinpan: If you look at Lara's Pic #3, That Printing below the Opener says, "55 gal. Drum Accessing Tool!" ;)

Seriously, Now that I notice it's made of Brass, I have doubts about my idea!

Lara, the Floor is solely yours!

Ok, I like this idea...google "antique survey transit" or "theodolite", see pics below, I may be seeing things, but the second and third pix seem to have a very similar piece to Kim's Whatsit :D

splicer module bracket ??? Like COUNTRY GIRL I too have looked at thousands of brassy pieces even telephones typewriters survey equipment telescopes etc etc....It could BE AN UNKNOWN UNSEEN PIECE meaning internal and unless that piece can be separated and found as a PART we may never know. Im almost convinced that it is a panel box latch...I just cant prove it YET! Goodnight peoples, Happy Monday coming up!

Michelle we are on the same page, I just can't prove it either. Thanks for everyones invested time. It has been very interesting and alot of fun. Keep the ideas comming, love seeing them.

Let's try to take this in a different direction...

It does seem to be a part of a larger "precision" device. Could it be part of a woodworking jig (guide) of some sort? Attached to a workbench to hold something in place?

Is there any significant wear on it?

No signifigant wear. My husband thinks the round knob used to turn and adjust the latch up or down into whatever it fit into. Make sense?
I agree with him and the handle part would only move slightly...Thats what makes me think it could be a lever for a vent....
