First off, I'm new to detecting and was just digging around in my back yard in N.W. Florida and came across this. Anyone ever seen anything like it? I'm digging in the back yard of a house built around 1895 (my property), thank you!. Rifle Cross Front with Ref.webpRifle Cross Back with Ref.webp

Very interesting. Never seen anything like it. Usually finding something with US on it is enough to spark my curiosity. Definitely looks post-CW. I'm interested to see what some of our real experts have to say...the hole on top is what really has me stumped.:icon_scratch:

It appears to be stamped USA (the A doesn't show as well, but it's there). Odd that it's oriented opposite of the rifles. How are the rifles attached?

Wow, that is very cool. I think the rifles are attached with a pin or bolt which has caused them to spin "upside down," opposite of how they were first constructed, (like nhbenz mentioned.) With the hole drilled at the top, is it possibly the bottom half of a suspension medal for a reunion, etc...? Happy Hunting, Sub 8-)

I am pretty sure it is WWI Rifleman/Infantry related. This style is odd though. Nice finds man! Keep at it!

I'm not sure how the rifles are attached. Looks like if they were to be rotated 180 left then they would be more centered and the barrels would be pointed up. The A is there for sure. I'm new to all this and am reluctant to hardly even clean anything except with cold water. Possibly some sort of ribbon medal holder for dress uniform?

i think it may be some type of sweetheart pin. The second picture shows what looks to me like flowers. I also think the rifles should be rotated 180 degrees. It looks to me that it may be gently persuaded to unbend. someone that knows better will hopefully chime in and either tell you not to mess with it or will give you hints on the best way to do it. I have unrolled bent brass before without breaking it but that is your call. Can you tell if there is anything on the back?
