The reason I hate hunting Civil War campsites in the middle of a field is that it's hard to separate the treasures from the farming trash.

This item is a brass cap 1 1/4" in diameter. It has a side inlet for what was probably a set screm to hold it on. It has an offset hole that is about 3/4" in diameter that is threaded, barely. And the inside of the cap is threaded, which makes no sense, because whatever went in the 3/4" hole wouldn't have been able to expand out to touch the walls of the 1 1/4" interior.

I'm stumped. Could be an improvised piece of farm machinery. Or....?

Thanks!

Although I have no clue what it is....the 3/4" hole could have held a handle to tighten the the 1 1/4" cap on. It being brass....3/4" set screw would break the brass. Wish I could help more.

I'm thinking a grease fitting. The threaded hole held the grease Zerk. A shaft ran inside, there would have been another one on the opposite side.

I always hate to throw away anything brass from a CW campsite...don't want to regret it later. I guess that's why the back of my CRV is full of rusty metal!

Are those 'threads' on the inside or maybe wear-groves? I'm still thinking "bushing with hole for grease zerk" because of the material. But if they are threads, It could have been an endcap for many things. I have a similar one that is much larger that was on the end of an ajustable pole stand. The threaded part had a large knurled hand screw. Interesting find!
