I can't make out headstamp but I know there is writing

It has 3 rings around casing

Measurements please, diameter and length, the more accurate the better.

I see “SS” at the end which leads me to Remington express hi brass shells. Assuming 12 ga, no way of telling what was in the shell prior, but being hi brass likely meant #6 fine shot up to buckshot. Paper shell so prior to the 1970s

There's no way that a 12 ga., it's sitting on a dime which is 17.9 mm, a 12 ga. is approximately 18.53 mm.

This is why I asked for measurement so at least we can start out with a accurate gauge or caliber in our guesses, since we're never going to be able to read the headstamp in that condition.

My apologies. You are 100% correct. I was looking at the brass and completely missed the coin, along with trying to give kids a bath. That’s a bit embarrassing.

Just went and got a .410 and laid it on a dime……it’s a .410

Most .410s are higher brass than normal 20s or 12s, so no telling other than likely a kid squirrel hunting 50+ yrs ago
